What is Human Trafficking?

The Trafficking of Women, Boys and Girls

This is illegal, it is against the law. But those who do it make very much money.  They gather, move around the world and sell women, boys and girls.  Why? So that they can make those people work like slaves. Slaves are not allowed to choose to leave a job. They are paid very little or nothing.  They are beaten or hurt if they refuse to work.  Slaves often have to work many long hours and are given too little food and rest.  The slaves are put into homes to be "cooking and cleaning slaves" or put into factories that are too hot and where the work is even too dangerous. Sometimes the traffickers force little girls into marriages when the girls are too young. Sometimes they abuse the women and children and force them to do things that no human being should ever be forced to do.

Where Does Human Trafficking Happen?

Human Trafficking - Where on Earth?

This happens all around the world. In poor nations and in rich ones. In Christian and Muslim nations. Among the poor and among the very wealthy. It is mostly hidden and done in secret. Sometimes parents sell their children to nice looking people who promise they will give those children a good job and a good education. Those people are lying and the parents are tricked or deceived.

Human Trafficking - How Does it Work?

Trafficking - How could this happen?
Often lying wicked people trick women or promise them good jobs in other countries or cities. The women are often without money or help or hope at home so they agree to go with the traffickers. When the women get to the place they find they were lied to. Now they are trapped. Some women and children are even held in chains. They find it very hard to escape; if they are caught they are beaten and abused even more.  Their lives are now filled with fear, danger and pain.

Traffickers often promise poor parents that they will give their child a better life "if only you would sell me your child for $20, I will give them a good job in the city. With the $20 you can feed your other children." These are the kinds of lies traffickers tell.
